The role rewards engineers who can code, debug, present, and stay calm in a room full of people who need the deployment to work this quarter. Product instinct helps because many customer requests are really symptoms, not requirements.
Useful tools vary by company, but SQL, API integration, workflow mapping, dashboard fluency, and security-conscious engineering show up repeatedly.
What it pays
Compensation reflects travel, complexity, and customer proximity. When the role sits near strategic accounts, there is often more flexibility on total package than on title.
How to break in
This is a natural move for engineers who like product work, customer contact, and ambiguous problem-solving more than pure platform depth. Implementation engineering, solutions engineering, consulting, and product-minded backend work are common on-ramps.
A portfolio is less important here than a track record of messy delivery. Teams want examples where requirements were vague, stakeholders disagreed, and the system still shipped.
